Sometimes I start with an idea: a theme, a technique, or a supply I want to use (like last week). This week, I started with none. This week, I just kind of stared at my desk and a black-gessoed card, and my mind was blank. Then I looked to my left and saw a stuffed bundle of ripped gold balloon leftover from a birthday. Repurposing even a tiny piece of that gigantic pile of mylar was the impetus for this week's card.

Creation steps:

1) Glue down gold mylar.

2) Use large bird background stamp (by Stampin' Up) to stamp white on the black exposed middle of the card (masking/covering over the gold), then mask over the black section of card to stamp the same stamp in black onto the gold mylar.

3) Mix gloss gel with a little iridescent gel and some glass bead gel. Apply through a stencil to the center of card. (Inevitably, there's some leftover... I'll address that next week)

4) Apply clear crackle paste around the dried stenciled gel to the remaining black background.

5) Make small nest from burlap string (fallen from Halloween costume & repurposed); glue down and add a star.

There was a relocation, a large and extended remodel during which my craft supplies were packed up, more active fostering, some pregnancies, and a birth!

During the first couple years of getting into the rhythms of parenting a youngster, "creative" time frequently was spent cleaning off my desk and trying to feel at home again in my craft room. There were a few projects: a 1st birthday album (that was completed sometime around the 18 month mark), some thank you cards for a job interview (completed several months into working said job), and a set of Halloween "BOO" letters that I thought were done but I may tinker with some more. You get the picture; drawn out projects that are completed much past their timely aims!

Without time to really settle into creating, I have been feeling adrift and blank when I sit at my desk. So I started thinking about creative challenges. These can take many forms, but I landed on a hybrid of a playing cards challenge and the Index Card A Day (ICAD) challenge. There's not a chance in... well, you know, that I can complete a card a day. But a card a week? That's doable. So isn't it very convenient that there are 52 cards in a deck of playing cards?

The June challenge over at Eclectic Ellapu is "A Touch of Purple/Pink"; come create with us!

This challenge, plus my Little Free Library being in need of some free bookmarks, me being in need of some crafting time, and having a random package of blank pastel bookmarks in hand made for a winning combination. I am not a big fan of pastel colors (except in hair dye!) and tend to veer away from them in crafting, which explains my burning desire to make these bookmark blanks go away. I wanted a simple project so that I would not sink hours and hours into design and execution; I quickly settled on a combination of subtle watermark background stamping with bolder stamping.
The stash of green tags keeps catching my eye, so several of my projects lately have started with a green tag base. As a few birthday presents sat on my desk calling out to me to finish packaging up for the mail, I felt that they needed a little something extra before I sealed them for mailing. Tags! I had already made another birthday tag for a present that went into the mail a couple weeks earlier, so more sounded like a great idea! This is part of Eclectic Ellapu's May "Anything Goes" challenge; come create with us and enter your project in the May challenge!

These tags I took in a different direction. I started by spraying what became their backs with hickory smoke Distress Spray Stain and Lindy's Stamp Gang gossamer gold Moon Shadow Mist spray. A little heat from the heat gun to dry, then flip over for some leaf green and grey Brushos application. I wasn't in love with how the Brushos turned out, but knew I was going to cover it up with ephemera anyway. It did cement that the Brushos' side of the tag would be the front, though!

Because I have a bit-too-abundant scrap paper drawer, I was determined to use some of it for my tag ephemera.
Tag #1 (starting on the left) has a scrap of napkin, inked book paper, soap packaging, used dryer sheet, and an image from a package of rubber stamps I ordered.

Tag #2 has a fiber paper scrap, metallic doily, used dryer sheet, and a fussy cut of a mis-stamped image from a past project.

Tag #3 has a catalog scrap and a cut out from a Netflix mailer.

As you can see from my ephemera list, I am a fan of upcycling. See an interesting image? Cut it out and add it to a drawer or folder collection. Twice or thrice used dryer sheets? A great source of soft texture or fog/snow effects for projects.
Instead, I decided to use some of the teal pinstripe tissue paper (thanks, ThredUp for a cool reusable!) that I had wrapped the gift in to make a tag.

I dry-brushed gesso in a neat pattern over a green tag, then used acrylic glazing medium to stick some tissue to the tag in a somewhat transparent manner. It needed some more tissue, so I took another piece and dabbed it in some excess twisted citron Distress Stain Spray I had puddled from another project I had been working on, prior to adhering it in an opposing direction on the tag.

My ephemera for this project came from the Tim Holtz Thrift Shop pack. As I played with layout and finalized my specific ephemera picks, I saw that the background needed more behind the ephemera. Washi tape to the rescue! The vintage ephemera needed a touch of vintage tape, and I love that the metallic arrows both added some shine and could stand in for the ups and downs of our days.
There has not been much crafting going on at my desk with the exception of some starts-and-stops kind of projects. Last week I started another project with not particular vision; I wanted to alter some vitamin bottles I have sitting around. Finding ways to reduce and upcycle trash while living in remote Alaska is even more important to me than usual, for currently, all trash here is burned or goes into the ocean. Neither are ideal, so I am conscientious in my purchases and creative in my disposal.

In this particular case, as I was working through a tentative plan for another larger bottle, I gessoed this smaller bottle as I worked on the larger bottle. Then it sat for a few days until one evening I randomly grabbed some of my blue acrylic craft paint and painted the bottom third of the bottle. After waiting just long enough for it to dry (no heat gun assistance this time, thank you very much), I liberally sprayed the entire bottle (and my hand) with Dylusions London Blue ink spray. Darling dearest thought I was joking when I told him I was about to dye my hand blue! This did give me an opportunity to test out some charcoal soap though, and it really does do a good job. I tried washing with both our regular hand soap and Dawn dish soap, but neither pulled as much of the blue ink out of my skin as the charcoal soap did. Good to know for the next time I dye my hands.

Hmm, what to do next? Since I had not yet played with the Pebeo Fantasy Prisme & Moon mediums I snuck up here earlier this year, after a day's drying time I decided to add a moon-type shape using the Onyx Prisme. FYI, the instructions are not kidding about needing mineral spirits on hand to clean your brush! Thankfully, my fast-acting hubby grabbed a nearby bottle of acetone to clean my brushes. After another two days for the Prisme to cure and much time digging though the deeper recesses of my stash, I settled on some lovely vintage rub-ons, a vintage apothecary sticker, some twine, and a quick sponging of white ink to embellish the bottle. My constant struggle is to push myself to embellish more and in a tasteful manner, so I kept wanting to add more, but found that simpler worked best for this "prescription" bottle. And what a lovely prescription it is, no? Take some time... to love, to craft, to soak up the elements, to pamper, to adventure, to visit, to do what brings you joy. And do shake things up occasionally! ;)
Never! ;) ...says the lady who made FORTY of these Christmas cards! I got the buckle idea from something I saw on Pinterest years ago, and had a fun (and eventually tedious) time making these paper belts & buckles. This also made great use of the button stash that I just had to buy as a kid, and am still working my way through.
I find my eyes are most frequently drawn to complicated, heavily embellished or multiple layer projects. My inspiration boards on Pinterest definitely corroborate this! I started this batch of birthday cards during a crafting evening with friends, so I did not want to spend hours designing a card; I wanted to get crafting! So I tried my hand at CAS.

While I accomplished my CAS goal, these cards still took hours... although a lot of that was drying time after playing with making my green, yellow, and blue Brushos fireworks streaks!
Bows are not a frequent guest in my crafting, but one found a welcome place in my Thanksgiving door hanger. 'Tis the season for holiday crafting!

This project included a bit of stamp masking, some ink blending & sprays, gelato stenciling, background stamping, sentiment embossing, mounting on painted cardboard, and, of course, a raffia bow.
My design team project for Eclectic Ellapu's October challenge pushed my crafting boundaries a bit. That's what challenges are for, right? This month's challenge theme is "shabby chic", so I tried my hand at shabby chic for the first time. I had some good technique inspiration to apply to my project by way of Pamellia over at My Little Craft Things, whose work has drawn my eye since the first time I saw one of her projects.

My two most used supplies on this card? Crackle paste and white acrylic craft paint. So much white acrylic paint! Only the pearls, tea-dyed lace, and rafia were left untouched by the white paint.
If you want to join in, make something with a gift-giving image/sentiment, make gift packaging, or make a gift!

My Design Team project is a gift that also has a gift theme, because really, every day is a gift. Once the invincibility of youth gives way to recognition of our mortality, this sentiment gains depth. With the idea that each day is a gift in my mind, this month's project took shape: a daily gift of one of my daily gifts. Thus, my tea book was born: seven pages of tea, one each day as a gift and a small way to reach across the miles to share a cup of tea with my friend.

I had some kraft postcard 12x12 paper on hand, so I gessoed it and started playing with gelatos, Brushos, and Twinkling H2Os. Not until after I water-sprayed the Brusho powder did I remember that gelatos are water reactive, and I was really wishing I had some fixative spray on hand. Lesson learned! Fortunately, it was the kind of creative accident that does not detract from the end result. The focal stamp is from Papertrey Ink's "All Booked Up" stamp set.
I am about to leave home again for another 9+ months after a couple of blissful months at home. Onward and upward, right? I am looking forward to beautiful sights and time to craft this fall and winter, but leaving home is getting harder each time I do it. It was a mood of home-based sentimentalism that inspired this month's Eclectic Ellapu piece for the Pink Team's Floral challenge.

Killing two birds with one stone, I used my crafting time to create a present for a friend. These wooden initials have been hanging out in my stash for a year or two, intended for this project, so I am very happy to have finally put them to use.

This was a fun one for me, as I originally learned about the Midsummer holiday via green walnuts. Seriously. It is odd, but true. Turns out that St. John's Day, aka Midsummer Day, aka June 24, marks the first day that many (European) markets have green walnuts available. Why would people want to buy unripened walnuts? To make pickled walnuts, vin de noix, and nocino, of course!

May you have a heady Midsummer Day!
To apply this concept in a personal way, I decided to focus on things that I am grateful for in my husband. I made a small series from a macaroni & cheese box, cut into a deck of 1.5" x 3" cards. This project was inspired by an article by Irene Rafael in the Jan/Feb 2016 issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors, by Gretchen Miller's incredible projects, and by an article about using gratitude journaling to manage stress.
It sat on my desk for nearly 3 months before I decided that it needed to be made useful or thrown away. That week, I needed a minimal supply, grab'n'go project, so here's what that almost-trash turned into:
He did not mind, and every once in a while his words still inspire me. Unfortunately, those "once in a whiles" that inspiration hits rarely correspond with when I have time to sit and craft. This year, though, I have slowly been working on a piece that will incorporate several lines of his poetry.

The background of this piece is a panel from an used USPS Priority Mail box, "stamped" in dark grey acrylic paint using wadded up packing paper, then layered with some green acrylic paint, then gel medium mixed with white and pearl acrylic paint. This background piece sat near my desk for months, until this evening, when many instances of mental contemplation met with crafting time and some final decisions. The major downside of having used the gel medium on the background is that I now cannot use the spray inks I had planned on using to ink over most all of this background. They wipe right off! Clear gesso would be the solution to this dilemma, but I only have white gesso on hand at the moment.
This post is just the layers I added tonight. I will post again when I add the final layers, embellishments, and poetry to this project. *crossing my fingers that it turns out well!*
This month's challenge is Anything Goes; please share your papercrafting projects!

Earlier this year, a set of Spellbinders Opulent Ovals and a Death Cab For Cutie album from my Amazon wishlist showed up in the mail randomly. Turned out that my mother-in-law had just sent me a little post-Christmas surprise. As a thank you, the first thing I made with my new Opulent Ovals dies was this card.

The card base was cut from a Spellbinders Timeless Rectangle die, three layers are from the Opulent Ovals set, and one is from the Labels Twenty-Four set.
